Installing a new app takes ten seconds, but the data it collects can stay with a company for years. Mobile games, streaming services, fitness trackers, social platforms and betting sites such as Aero bet all ask for some personal information, and most of it is shared without much thought. The good news is that checking an app before you trust it does not require technical knowledge. With a short routine, you can spot overreaching permissions, weak account security and risky payment setups before they become a problem.
Check Who Is Behind the App
Start with the developer, not the screenshots. In the App Store or Google Play, tap the developer name and look at their other apps, their website and their contact details. An established company with a real address and a support page is easier to hold accountable than an anonymous publisher with dozens of near-identical games. Read a handful of recent reviews, especially the critical ones, because they often mention aggressive ads, billing problems or account bans.
Both major app stores now show privacy summaries on each listing. Apple calls them App Privacy details, and Google Play has a Data safety section. They list which data types an app collects, whether they are linked to your identity and whether they are used for tracking. These labels are written by the developers themselves, so they are not a guarantee, but they are a useful first filter. A simple offline puzzle game that claims to collect location, contacts and browsing history deserves a second look.
Read Permissions Like a Contract
Permissions are where an app asks for access to the hardware and data on your phone. Modern versions of iOS and Android ask at the moment the feature is needed, which gives you a chance to think. The question is always the same: does this app need this access to do the job I installed it for?

Choose the narrowest option you can. Both systems let you allow location only while the app is in use, and iOS can share approximate rather than precise location. You can review and revoke permissions at any time in your phone’s settings, and Android automatically resets permissions for apps you have not used for a while.

Protect the Account, Not Just the Device
Many entertainment apps are really front doors to online accounts, and accounts are what attackers target. Reused passwords are the biggest risk: when one service leaks its database, criminals try the same email and password combination everywhere else. A password manager solves this by generating and storing a unique password for every service.
Turn on two-factor authentication wherever it is offered. An authenticator app or a hardware key is stronger than SMS codes, which can be intercepted through SIM swapping. More services now support passkeys, which replace passwords with a cryptographic key stored on your device and unlocked with your face, fingerprint or PIN. Passkeys cannot be phished in the usual way, because they only work on the genuine website or app they were created for.
A quick account check takes only a few minutes for each important service:
- Recovery options: make sure the recovery email and phone number are current, since an outdated number can lock you out for good.
- Active sessions: many apps list the devices where you are signed in. Sign out of anything you do not recognize.
- Login alerts: turn on email or push alerts for new sign-ins, so you notice suspicious access quickly.
- Linked accounts: review which apps can sign you in with Google, Apple or Facebook and remove the ones you no longer use.
Keep Payments Under Your Control
Games and entertainment apps make money through subscriptions, in-app purchases and, in the case of real-money platforms, deposits. Payments made through the App Store or Google Play have one advantage: your card details stay with Apple or Google, and both offer refund request processes. Require authentication for every purchase, so a child or a friend holding your unlocked phone cannot buy anything by accident.
For services that take card payments directly, consider a virtual card from your bank with its own spending limit. Never send photos of your card or identity documents through chat apps or email, even if someone claims to be from support.
Extra Care With Real-Money Platforms
Betting and casino platforms deserve the strictest checks, because they hold both money and identity documents. On Android, you can delete your advertising ID in the privacy settings, which stops apps from using it to connect your activity.
Notifications deserve the same scrutiny. Entertainment apps often use them to pull you back with offers and reminders. Allow notifications only for genuinely useful information, such as messages or security alerts, and switch off promotional ones. You will spend less time on autopilot and see fewer offers designed to trigger impulse decisions.

Clean Up Old Apps and Accounts
Most phones carry apps that have not been opened in months. Each one may still hold an account with your email, payment details or saved profile. Deleting the app from the phone does not delete the account, so open the app first, look for account deletion in the settings and use it. Both Apple and Google now require apps that let you create an account to offer a way to delete it, which makes this much easier than it used to be.
A twice-yearly cleanup is enough for most people. Remove unused apps, review permissions for the ones you keep, check which services have stored payment methods and change any password you know has been reused. It takes less than an hour and greatly reduces the amount of personal data floating around online. Choosing apps that respect your data is not about avoiding fun. It is about making sure that the games, shows and platforms you enjoy are the only things getting your attention.
